Race Report: Q&A With Reed Boggs, 2021 Rampage Third Place Finisher
A reduced field size at this year's Red Bull Rampage left Reeds Boggs, and a lot of other talented riders, off of the automatic qualification list. A few days before the event, Reed got the nod from the promoters that he'd be competing in the big show. Not one to waste an opportunity, Reed not only proved that he belonged, but that he was one the best competitors there that day. After putting together a strong ride that nevertheless found him outside the top 10 in 2019, Reed's off year of hard work paid off, landing him a third place finish this year, a podium spot at one of the most prestigious events in mountain biking. We caught up with Reed for a quick Q&A before he heads to Hawaii for some well deserved down time. Click here to watch Reed's run that scored an 87 and landed him on the podium.

Stan's NoTubes: What's it like sitting at the top of the drop in looking down on what is arguably the gnarliest terrain that a bicycle has ever been ridden on?
RB: There’s so many emotions that come to mind but for me there’s mostly confidence and determination. We work so hard all year for that moment and it all comes down to a 1-2 minute run. It’s a lot of fun but at the same time so nerve racking. It’s a wild feeling but when you get to the bottom, it’s all worth it!
SNT: Not being listed on the automatic qualification list would be a major setback for some riders. How did you work through that to put together an incredible run and land yourself on the podium?
RB: Perseverance. My whole year revolves around Rampage. Training the mind, getting my body in shape, and riding my bike. I kept telling myself I was going to be in the main event and stayed positive and it worked out. It’s a surreal feeling.
SNT: Without competition in 2020, how did you stay busy and on top of your game to come back from an off-year riding bigger and better than ever?
RB: I worked on various video projects to stay busy. On different bikes, as well as different terrain. At the end of the day, you need every bike skill there is to ride Rampage. I try and focus on dialing in my tricks on the small bike, then slowly bring them over the the big bike so I’m confident in the move/trick because I’ve already perfected them on a smaller travel bike. It all helps and pays off.
SNT: Do you prefer new venues or established ones?
RB: I honestly don’t care. As long as I have the chance to build a fun line with my team, I’m happy.
SNT: What's next for Reed Boggs?
RB: Keep working. Stay motivated. And work even harder so I can achieve a win at Rampage one day. I know I can do it.
